ranting about classes
Sep. 16th, 2003 03:09 pmFor some reason, my Biolethics class today pissed the crap out of me. I guess it's just this ongoing attitude they have that Science is bad, Technology is evil, and that all of the problems we had in society would be magically fixed if we could just get rid of that stuff.
Well, has it occurred to anyone that just maybe it's not the technology that's the source of the problems here? Oh, we don't want gene scans, because then people could get fired from their jobs! Oh, we can't do genetic testing, because then people won't be able to get health insurance! Oh, we shouldn't develop cures for debilitating genetic conditions, because not everyone will be able to afford them!
Well, y'know, maybe if we didn't have a rabid capitalist society that plays commerce with human lives, then these wouldn't be issues! These problems ARE. NOT. NEW. They're the same old problems in a new guise. All this is is power in the form of knowledge. If we had the capability of making rational decisions with power, instead of running amox like a kid with an AK-47 who wants to be just like the heroes he sees on TV, then maybe we wouldn't have those problems in the first place.
