This one seems to be a bit harder than the others... I modified it a bit from the original. Again, if you want to guess, comment without viewing other replies first. ;)

I have one trunk and a thousand branches,
And yet I have no leaves.
Water drowns and pulls me down
Yet I float on the breeze.
I am the body's warm companion
I am not there at birth,
Yet I am no beast's hide nor hair,
Nor plant upon the earth.
I am torn and cast aside,
Yet lay beside you in the night,
The blood that runs down through my veins
Is black without a hint of white.

This is very intriguing but my head hurts too much to try to figure it out right now. (Just wanted to let you know that I've been enjoying your riddles.)

p.s. I may have missed some posts...how is your kitty?

*hugs* I doubt you missed anything... I haven't posted much about him because his condition hasn't changed much. slow, steady decline, it looks like...

At least he's eating again.

I thought that too at first, but the inconsistencies seem to be many. Why would we lay down at night with a feather? and why would the blood that runs through its veins be black, without a trace of white?

*still musing*

unless the you're laying down with a feather pillow or down blanket...

even then, feathers float on the water surface. ever seen a duck/goose pond? I guess... EVENTUALLY they sink, but when one thinks of how a feather reacts to water, sinking isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

and the blood thing still gets me. it can't be hinting at a feather being used as a quill, because TONS of ink colours were used. red, blue and brown were other faves at the time of quills. it seems a little too specific, which is off-putting.

*goes back to still more pondering* Toughie. Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing it. o_o;;

Usually the quill looks to be black in the middle. At least on most of the birds here, it does. And as to the drowning bit. If a bird is flying and it starts raining, that interferes with the glide the feathers provide and the bird has to stop. Maybe that's that part.

Yes, feather is the correct answer.
