noise

So it seems that after 2 years of living in a Japanese apartment block, I underestimated the importance of noise controls on my new living space.

Especially if I'm going to be working a night shift. --Well honestly, working a day shift wouldn't be much better; people tend to throw (very) loud parties with floor-thumping music late on week nights.

Brought to you by now 3 straight hours of an industrial-grade vacuum pump running directly beneath my window, making speech impossible, let alone sleep. Apparently they are digging a hole, in the next lot over, and using the vacuum to suck up the dirt they dig up. Why they are doing it this way instead of, for example, hauling away the dirt in wheelbarrows the old-fashioned way, I do not know, if it's not to be deliberately obnoxious to all of the surrounding apartments.

*pats*

Time to invest in really good earplugs. They saved my life in undergrad, when I had a roommate who snored like a truck.

for serious, I second the earplug recommendation. we sometimes use them when callie has forgotten where we are. she can cry up a storm at our bedroom door.

I do fortunately have earplugs. I ended up wearing them and playing my music at top volume. Good times.

White noise machines can be a big help if you're trying to sleep. Even a portable fan can help.
