Here in Seattle
Sep. 2nd, 2008 03:43 pmSo, a status update from me: I arrived in Seattle on Saturday afternoon. Yay! My original plan had been to rest and goof off on Sat and Sun and then get to work on Monday, but I neglected to take the date into account. Labor day: oops.
But today I got started. I submitted an application to work at Starbucks, and hopefully that will lead to something (signs are good.) Less good on the housing front. I've called three places and sent emails to three more, but so far nobody has responded. :\ I'd go down there in person but somehow I think that would be useless without making an appointment first... by phone or by email. Don't these people WANT people to respond to their ads? Argh.
Other than that... Seattle is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. And COLD. I'd spent the whole trip across the American Southwest and up through California absolutely sweltering, and then suddenly it's 50, 60 degrees. X_X I don't have any warm clothes -- they're all in transit across the Pacific. I wasn't expecting such a dramatic temperature shift. :\ Oh well, I shiver on.
(P.S: This album -- The Crane Wife by the Decemberists -- is absolutely fantastic and everyone should buy it.)

Date: 2008-09-02 11:21 pm (UTC)I second your thought that making appointments is important. Many leasing offices only have one or two people in them at any given time and if one is showing an apartment.... not sure why they wouldn't get back to you. Bad luck maybe? Holiday weekend and people are catching up on email? Two of the people I need to make contracts with for the wedding are out of the office until Thursday. I thought it was strange only because they both took off the same time.. weird. Maybe people took long vacations? dunno.
Good luck though! on work and housing fronts.

Date: 2008-09-03 07:03 pm (UTC)A really common trick around here is for brokers/leasing offices to list fabulous no-fee apartments in the Craigslist no-fee section, but when you call them, they say, "Oh, that apartment was just rented! But we have these OTHER almost as fabulous apartments, and some are only half-fee not full-fee..." Bastards. I hate dealing with 95% of brokers. The good ones are few and far between.
