You know, I'd forgotten about FATAL until today. And then I realized something.

FATAL is The Game.

By which I mean: You can only win it by forgetting it ever was. As soon as you remember it exists, you've lost.

See, this is where Orwell's Doublethink comes in handy. At one and the same time, I think and do not think about the Game; therefore I have not lost it, and yet I also have the satisfaction of knowing I have not lost it. Mostly Doublethink is used for the most devious of political purposes, whereby I say aloud things that amount to nasty smears of some candidate, yet maintain my innocent frame of mind in not having intended anything untoward; so it is nice to know that it can be used in the Pursuit of the Good, as in this otherwise insoluble paradox.
