Next week Asidian is coming to visit, and also on Thursday people are going to be coming into my apartment to install a fire alarm. O_O So, that's two things that motivated me to (finally) really clean up my apartment.

Today I did laundry, took recyclables to the store, took my bedding to the laundromat to be washed, dried, bed made, trash gathered up and thrown out (in large amounts;) floor swept, scrubbed, and mopped. Whew.

Up next: Dishes...

There's nothing like people coming over to motivate me to do what I should be doing anyway. Sounds like you got a lot done!

I am reminded of (re-)cleaning your room after you left for college … I moved the furniture away from the wall, and … talk about large amounts of trash … plus about a quarter of our spoons and dishes ….

Luckily we love you for your faults as well as for your virtues!

(I am constantly amazed to discover that my children do actually know how to clean house. You could never have proved it when they lived with us.)

You'd never guess this, but at work, they think I'm a freak for organization. I tell them you think I'm a slob and they scoff.

It may just be a living-on-one's-own thing. My floor in my parents' house always had a nice thick layer of clothes, books, knicknacks, books, papers, and anything else that happened to be around. Walking on actual foor was a real challenge, requiring acrobatics that to this day I credit with improving my agility. In my own dorm rooms, and especially now in my apartment, I actually do a pretty good job of keeping my floor clean and everything well-organized. I even vacuum regularly!

The biggest problem with that room was that I had been in it for ten years, most of which I had no idea how to clean up after myself. By the time I had learned how and even developed fairly good cleaning habits, it was too late -- I had no idea how to make a dent in the accumulated mess. I have also, however, ditched some of the problematic mess-creating habits -- eating in bed, for example, I haven't done since I left home. :)
