So, through an unfortunate stint of timing, I managed to acquire some manner of food poisoning at just about the same time my pre-menstrual cramps hit. This diabolical synergism results in possibly my worst experience since coming to Japan ever.

The food poisoning (I must assume) came from lunch yesterday. I didn't have time to cook on Tuesday night, so for Wednesday lunch i went and grabbed something pre-made from the grocery store. This turned out to be a bad, bad error. I should have read the labels first, because it turned out to be some kind of fried liver thing. I was not able to eat more than a few bites before I had to stop, which in retrospect was probably lucky. (Augh, even thinking and typing about brings back the memory of the horrible, horrible taste, despite having thoroughly purged my apartment of it upon coming home.)

I started feeling ill shortly before leaving work, and it got worse all the way home and once I was home. At some point I started a nasty case of the runs and then vomiting, which continued all last evening.

Then the cramps arrived!

The big problem is that the treatments which are good for one malady, exacerbate the other. I usually control my cramps through religious doses of ibuprofen, but the ibuprofen was making my nausea worse (to say nothing of having trouble keeping it down.) Refraining from eating (or at least eating much,) which is the best way to make the vomiting manageable, only makes the cramps worse. And I won't go into too much detail about the third thing, except to note that cramps mess up my intestines at the best of times.

So with all the various factors combined, I called in sick today -- didn't think they'd really want me there having to make trips to hurl in the teacher's restroom every half hour or so. Now I must go lie down clutching my bowl and my hot water bottle, because I'm starting to feel like shit again and lying down is the only thing that makes it manageable. I must carefully time my activities to the brief period directly after losing my lunch again, which makes me feel much better (for about five minutes.)

Pretty sure. Now I'm only throwing up if I eat something, as opposed to regularly whether I eat or not.

On the up side, as a birthday present I got cookies from cryo yesterday! =D I managed to avoid throwing up on the postman, although it was a close thing. And I can't eat them yet, but I know I will enjoy them when I do!

Do you have any hard candy or such? That used to help you get past the nausea once the worst of the illness passed.

Do keep trying to keep some liquids down – sweet, but not too sweet. Maybe tea?

Lots of love …
