ipod woes

Will somebody please offer advice as to how I can get my new second-hand ipod to do something, that doesn't involve stringing up the guy who sold it to me by his balls for fraud?

[edit] My ipod is on this chart, the second of the iPods that has "30" in the name -- iPod (30 GB dock connector), 2003-04, touch wheel, 30 GB, ipod software version 2.3.

iPod Updater 2005-09-23 (which I just downloaded and installed) includes: iPod Software 2.3, for iPod with dock connector. However, although my iPod is plugged in, there is nothing showing. The computer does not think it's there.

I think the problem is not the software. I think it's that, as this FAQ provided warns, that the older iPods (it says, the iPods without click wheels, which describes mine) won't charge through a USB cable. They need a Firewire cable, which I don't have, so I'll have to beat it out of the guy.

for starters, what is it not doing? is it just blank with nothing showing up on the screen? try charging it. do you have the disk for re-installing it from scratch? try that, and then charge it after the ipod's been wiped/reset. if you need the disk, email me, and I'll see if I can send you the utility somehow.

Blank. It doesn't do anything, when I plug it in to the charger, or when I plug it into the iMac. It doesn't do anything at all.

Do you have the formatting disk? Try setting up iTunes, plug in the iPod, and then install the iPod system from scratch. The computer should locate the iPod and do its magic on the little box.

No, I don't have the formatting disk.

Mine's packed, but I can find it by tomorrow morning and send you a zipped copy, unless there's another iPod person who has a disk handy and can do that. Will check in, in the morning, and find out if you need me to dig it out.

Thanks a million. This is really frustrating and spastic.

Have you checked all the base tech support issues?

Note: iPod models without a Click Wheel cannot be charged via USB. I assume this means I need a Firewire cable to charge it. Why on earth didn't the guy give me one when I bought it? Argh.

1) Do you have all the parts? This should be the iPod, a USB cable, and the disk with the iPod/iTunes programs. The instruction manual is also nice.

2) If not, string the guy up. You CANNOT use an iPod WITHOUT the programs. And it also depends on which generation of iPod it is. The older ones aren't as nifty.

3) ... why doesn't your iPod have a clickwheel? ALL iPods have click wheels. That's how you use them.

I got the iPod, the USB cable, but no disk. @_@ Are you sure I need the disk? My Software Update regularly bugs me to download new versions of iPod software, so if that's not it, what is it?

This ipod looks like this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688#dockconnector

I'm pretty sure you need the disk. You need it to set up the iPod in the first place, so it synchs with your computer. When I set up Yondy to work with Shukaku, I basically "lost" all the songs that were on Yondy from Solo.

And you have one of the oooold iPods. Wow. I barely remember iPods before they got the clickwheel. And yes, I think Firewire might be needed, especially if you can't charge the iPod through the USB cable. You could also find an Apple store and ask the people there what to do. I don't know if the Charger will work with that kind of iPod.

Sol is saying she will send me a copy of the disk. :D :D

I have a Mini iPod, but Zan has an older iPod -- I can't tell which iPod you have based on the link above. Mine is smaller, but the older iPods have a series of buttons across the front instead of a click wheel. Is yours like that? If it is, msg Zania and ask her if you could get a copy of the installation/registration disk from her. Then you can install the software on your computer, attach the iPod to the computer, and sync the two -- then your iPod should (hopefully) behave.

The program that's on the disk is one you can also get online.

Look here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

I hope this helps -_-

I'm downloading it just in case, but I don't think it will do me any good unless I can get the iPod to wake up.

Here's the way it works:

1. install the software utility on the computer.
2. plug in the iPod to the computer (USB or firewire)
3. the computer "finds" the iPod
4. the computer asks you whether you want to update or reinstall (select reinstall)
5. the computer loads the proper software onto the iPod all over again, syncing it with your comp
6. the iPod begins charging, once it's got all the proper software

Make sense? I might be missing a step or two, but that's the basics as I recall them.

Can't you charge it by just plugging it into the wall? I don't have a MAC, so mine never charges when it's plugged into the computer. It doesn't matter if it's USB or Firewire. But you have to have the cord with the firewire end to plug it into the adaptor. I can't believe he didn't give that to you. Did you get the wall adaptor?

He did give me the adaptor, and I tried charging it by plugging it into the wall, but it just doesn't charge.

Hate to tell you, but if it won't charge by plugging it into the wall, I'm not sure plugging it into the computer will do anything different. It sounds like the ipod is dead >_> It could possibly be a dead battery, which would take buying a new one from Mac, but if it's a fried hard drive then it's basically trash.

It's beginning to sound like consumer fraud. What protections did you have on the purchase?
