I maintain, he is not going to stay gone.

I mean, come ON. Do we seriously think that Sirius is gone for good? A dynamic, important, popular character dies in a mysterious, arcanely magical fashion, leaving behind no body. It's the magical equivalent of Indiana Jones falling off a cliff into a river.
I might be inclined to think that the lack of a body was attributable to delicacy on Rowling's part, out of respect for the audience... but when Cedric died, the fate of his corpse was of great concern to the text. And considering Rowling's repeatedly proven love for sudden, dramatic plot twists, even at the expense of good logical flow, and fake-outs to confuse the audience... we are not exactly talking about a writer with too much dignity to revive a fallen character.
Yes, I am aware that Rowling said she was not going to bring him back... but then, if his revival -- most particularly an unexpected revival -- was going to be a key drama point in future books, would she be in a hurry to give it away? She's gone back on her statements before.
Furthermore, the mechanics to bring a person back from death are hardly out of the question, no matter what Dumbledore may have told Harry. Bits and pieces of it are already all over the place; the ghosts, the portraits. Clearly they're doing research on the subject in the Ministry of Magic. And here's the biggie... Voldemort; his entire existence has been devoted to the study of death, how to manipulate it, and how to come back for it; he was able to pull himself back from way beyond the brink of death. How hard is it to envision a scenario where he does the same to Sirius? Think about the potential for him; a weapon to use against Harry that could completely devastate him. Voldemort has a proven tendancy to try and twist his opponent's strengths into weaknesses, after all.
When you look at the whole picture, all the elements are just sitting there, neatly awaiting Sirius' return. I officially predict that returned!Sirius will make a cameo by the end of book 6, and return in full -- most likely as a villain, at least at first -- in book 7.
We'll see.
