Undoubtedly a lot of you have seen these articles before, but...

Teen girls sued for giving away cookies
Similar article on the situation

I mean, I know if I found a plate of cookies with a construction paper heart saying "Hope you're having a nice day! Love," I'd sure think it was a vicious threat aimed against my life and family. I'd sure be furious with the inconsiderate people who went around giving out cookies. I'd sure want to sue them for $1000 and give them harassing calls.

Bitterness towards the asshattery woman aside, if this isn't a clear case of social isolationist paranoia triumphing over community spirit, I don't know what is.

Precisely. And someone ought to smack the judge upside the head.

When I initially heard about this, I thought "Euw, still, anxiety attack, compensation for large medical bills and no punitive damages, yeah, I guess that's not too unreasonable." That was before I found out that the families offered to pay her medical bills and she sued them because she felt that their apologies "rang false." What a horrible person. I hope she does have to move out of town because everybody hates her; it would be just.

I did attempt to see her side of it... yes, it would be scary to have someone knock on your door at 10 PM and then run off, but the object and the note on the doorstop ought to have made it abundantly clear what was going on. Only a paranoid could have assumed that construction-paper hearts and cookies could hide a sinister motive. And then that she stated that she brought the case to court despite the offer to pay because she wanted to teach the girls a lesson? Uh. yeah. Maybe the malicious one isn't the girls, here.

Thanks for posting those articles. I hadn't known about the incident. It made me want to cry. Those poor girls. I want to hug them and tell them that they did the right thing. I hope someone did. There are so few truly wonderful people in the world and someone awful keeps ruining them. I hope the girls remember the good of this incident and not the bad. I hope they continue to have good hearts and not let one crazy ruin their good will.
Damn the world.
