On the down side, I managed to get a sunburn in March -- in a northern-ish climate, on a variably cloudy day, spending much of my time in the shade. My coworkers will boggle, and probably ask if I went to Okinawa instead of Kyoto.
On the up side, I got to see a lot of really beautiful shrines, and more of Kyoto than I would have if we hadn't gotten lost. :) Kyoto is a pretty awesome city. It seems to have avoided the "anti-charm bomb" effect described by Dave Barry that afflicts many Japanese cities (also known as 1950s-Era Architecture In Concrete.) It's cramped and tiny -- but also very neat, in all senses of the word, and very pretty.
