It's been four days. Why is this stupid cold not gone yet? *grumps* I even missed class today -- I woke up at 10:30, looked at the clock, said "Fuck it," and went back to sleep. Yes, literally. I do a lot of swearing when I'm half-asleep. >_>;

I actually have a sneaking suspicion it restarted its life-cycle somehow. On Friday and Saturday (and on Thursday, for that matter) I was sneezing and had runny nose. Now I'm coughing up gunk. I suspect the cold gave up my upper respiratory system as a lost battleground and moved south to my chest.

*glares at cold (in mirror)* Go away! I want to go to Yaoi-con! And I'd prefer not to infect everyone in the hotel!

Seriously, you need to just lay down and REST. Drink lots of orange juice or take vitamin C, and stay warm. There's also these little zinc lozenge things that can help.

How am I supposed to rest? I have classes, you know!

*blinks* Uhmmm... when I'm sick, I usually skip all classes and stay in bed to rest. That's because my body basically stops working until it gets better. I just have to shoot off a few e-mails to my professors saying that I'm sick and get notes from classmates. You're PAYING to go to school, so you can skip any damn time you please, especially if you're sick.

Cold wisdom

The common wisdom on colds is that they generally last for a week & a half - but sometimes it's only ten days.

If you're coughing up gunk - does your chest hurt? Are you running a fever? If two yeses, you should go to student health services to check out the possibility of pneumonia. If only one yes, get someone to get you some plain Robitussin (guiafenisen) to help loosen up the gunk & make it easier to cough up.

If the cough is just bringing back up the stuff from your runny nose draining into the back of your throat - the guiafenisen will still help.

Re your earlier comment on Nyquil - it's not Benandryl (diphenhydramine) that make you so sleepy - it's the alcohol. (There's no diphenhydramine in Nyquil. There is some other antihistamine, which will also contribute a sedative effect.) And it is the cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, that, if you take too much, will cause the racing heart, etc, discomfort.

Your sister is right about the Benadryl - it makes a good, safe sleep aid.

Feel better soon!

Love, Mom

My chest hurts all the time, just more so when I cough. I don't think I'm running a fever, although I don't have a thermometer, so it's hard to accurately self-diagnose. I do feel cold, but it's been cold, and it's a little hard to tell. Still, although I feel generally lousy, I don't feel bad enough that I feel alarmed right now. I'll try and get someone to bring me Robitussin, or look in Huntley bookstore for it. They have some medicines there.

Noted about the Benadryl.

My Nyquil bottle says: Active ingredients -- Acetaminophen (painkiller), Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant), Doxylamine succinate (antihistamine), Psuedophedrine (decongestant). It doesn't say there's any alcohol in it. How could the amount of alcohol in a two-tablespoon dose be enough to put someone to sleep, anyway? Two or three beers won't even put me to sleep. ;-)

It's 25% alcohol. Combined with the antihisamine, and the person with a cold being tired anyway, it's enough. Dr. Amy
