school, the cradle of the... something.
Sep. 3rd, 2004 11:25 pmSo, updates. (1)
I've had my first week of classes now. So far, they all look pretty good and exciting, except for Japanese, which looks like DOOM.(2) It's looking like Engineering Design and Politics of Community Design will have overlap (gee, who would have guessed?) but I don't mind that at all. I remember last year, when three of my classes overlapped so closely it was sometimes like leaving one class and going to the same class, different professors. I think it's good, gives me several perspectives on one subject matter, gives me a rounded view instead of just one facet.
PCD looks like it'll be relatively light on coursework.(3) Lot of reading though, and my books still haven't arrived. I have to read the entirety of 'Cradle to Cradle' essentially um... tonight and tomorrow, and write a paper on it Sunday. >_>;; Damn this school for not giving us Labor Day off.
Abnormal psych, too. One of the assignments is that I have to rent one of the movies given on a list, watch it, and write a paper analyzing the main character's psychopathy. Included on the list (along with many others) are I Am Sam, Girl Interrupted, and The Sixth Sense. Is it really fair to include 6thS on this list, since the character was not actually schizophrenic, but was seeing actual ghosts? Not that that didn't fuck with his head plenty anyway. God, I love that movie.
The professor seems to have it together, coherent and forward-moving, but she's also fully in posession of a lot of the subtleties of psychology and psychopathology especially -- you know, how can you judge when a person is truly disturbed and needs help, as opposed to when their behavior is just considered 'abnormal'? What is 'normal' anyway? Etc, etc. She started off the class by asking people what they thought 'mentally disturbed' was, and then explaining the problem with our answeres. I thought mine was quite good -- "a person counts as mentally disturbed when their psychological state is such that they can no longer function successfully in society." Her refutation was "Well, if we drop a person all alone on a deserted island, will they be able to survive?" which I thought was rather missing the point.
Japanese... is going to kill me. Was I just recently thinking how happy I was to be able to understand Japanese and that I was looking forward to improving my mastery? I lied. The only up side is that all my school friends are in this class, so at least I have people to study with.
All my stuff is here now. I'm so happy. I love my room now. It's big and square and has lots of shelves/storage space. I'll take pictures at some point but right now it's a mess -- still unpacking and putting up posters.(4) The yearly dance of "STAY ON THE WALL DAMMIT" has begun. At least this year only half of my walls are made of the Mysterious Tape Repelling substance. All I need now are chains to put my curtains up, and I'll be set. ^_^
I seem to be missing the cables for my external drive. o_o; This is a big problem as the exdrive has FMA 45 on it and I need to send to
windandwater. Parents, sister,(5) could you look for them? I don't have either the power cable or the firewire cable, although it also seems to have USB, so that's all right.
I also talked to Joanne today, and I'll be working Thursday afternoons and what looks like Friday mornings. I'm kind of hoping I can pick up a second job working at the Pit.(6) I could use a few more hours a week.
(1)This post is brought to you by "pointless footnotes."
(2)TM.
(3)Knock on wood.
(4)Most of which do not feature naked men.
(5)When you get back, that is.
(6)Only slightly less sleazy than it sounds.

Date: 2004-09-04 02:30 am (UTC)Good luck with Japanese. Sadly, I gave up on it after going on my trip to Japan. There's no way I'll ever understand the spoken language. Jay's kept with it though. I'm proud of him for that. ^___^
