So, today me and my best friend went out birthday shopping. Hers or mine, you ask? Both. We have a tradition that, instead of buying each other presents before our birthdays, we wait until afterwards, then go shopping together and buy each other presents then. Her present was a shirt from Forever 21 (aka the slut supply store. wow. this store explains so much of what I saw in high school. but before you jump to conclusions, this was a very nice shirt and I bought one of my own, anyway) and a DVD of Jim Henson's "The Storyteller."

Hers to me was this really awesome sweater. We had gone to New York and Company so she could replace a sweater which had gotten ruined that spring. Unfortunately, they didn't have the model she wanted... but they did have a very similar model that was a lighter material, and with white trimming. I saw it, said, "That is awesome, if you don't want it, I do." So she bought it, and it was my birthday present, and it is a super cool shirt that looks v. sharp on me... and I didn't realize until I'd gotten home that it's also the spitting image of Ed's black shirt, minus only the huge zipper pull. @_@;

I also got a plainer, cheaper, more servicable sweater at Sears -- the funny thing was that this sweater was Land's End, but it was exactly the same model as the sweater she was wearing, which was some other brand, Coolidge and Baker's or something like that. Only the color (blue instead of green) and the zipper are different. Wow. Why do we have a bunch of different design companies, again?

We also visited Godiva's, and caught the end of the sale; stopped by B&N (they still don't have Angel Sanctuary 3) and Best Buy (see above comment about the Jim Henson DVDs.) It was a good trip, except at the last moment I chickened out on lending her Fruits basket because damn it, I want to read it again.

Something scary actually happened the other day (not on this shopping trip, but on a different one) when I was driving. We came out of the Trader Joe's and I got into the driver's seat and started up the car. The minivan on my left is parked really close to me, and I'm worried about scraping them, so I put it in reverse and go very slowly. Except that, the wheel won't turn. O_o;; Not only will it not turn, it won't *un* turn, either. It's stuck in a very small degree arc, and I can't fix it.

Sister suggests that I put the car into first gear and just pull forward, since the space in front of me is empty, and maybe the wheel will straighten. Okay, I put the car into first gear. Lo and behold... the car keeps going backwards. By this time, I'm a little freaked out. So, I step on the brake. And guess what! The brake is frozen and doesn't respond.

Now thoroughly spooked, I pull the emergency brake and turn off the car. Sister suggests we switch places and let her try. I'm willing enough, let her get into the driver's seat. She turns on the car, and it goes into first gear, the wheel turns, and the brake works. @_@; WTF? I don't think I jammed it or anything. Maybe it just hates me.

At any rate, it was a bit spooky.

Ooh wow... I most recently learned how to drive, and these are the kind of nightmares I have.

It was scary! The more so because it was inexplicable!

You know, I actually saw a special on NBC (I think) a couple of years ago about all these different cars that did weird inexplicable things like what you said and driving around in circles alone, and how they took apart one of the first Ford cars and found a little black box that seemingly had no purpose.

True urban legend?

o_o Way to creep me out. I actually think I must have set off some kind of security system.

Something like that happened to me just before the transmission went out -- except the brakes still worked. Nothing is scarier than the BRAKES NOT WORKING.

Yeah -- up till that point it was just weird and a bit embarassing. THAT was scary.
