Our college anime club is trying to figure out what to show for opening night next semester. It must be a movie or an OAV, to fit in a few hours. Must be good enough to convince an auditorium full of new students to remain in the club.Must not be incredibly depressing, too blatantly pornish, too overly gory, or, alas, too blatantly yaoi. The Utena movie, Spirited Away, Castle of Cagliostro, Laputa, Ghost in the Shell and Hoshi no Koe have all been shown recently, and Grave of the Fireflies, Angel Sanctuary, and Ninja Scroll have all been vetoed as violating the above criteria.

Any suggestions?

Would Vampire Hunter D and VHD Bloodlust be too bloody? I don't recall it being gory. Escaflowne Movie? (I doubt that you'd have to see the series to understand the movie since it seems the movie is of its own thing). Cowboy Bebop movie is good. Thats all I can think of right now.

Escaflowne Movie and Cowboy Bebop Movie both shown recently.

I saw Vampire Hunter D once, and I thought it was really terrible. -_-; Bloodlust might not be too bad, except that it has no Japanese soundtrack, and Animotion is the biggest bunch of rabid sub snobs you ever saw.

But the Bloodlust voices are actually good (and I'm a 'rabid' dub hater)... which I think is because there were no Japanese voices to begin with? Either way, it's a great movie, much better than the first one if a little on the sad side. Petshop of Horrors is good (only subbed, though, and I love anything with Toshihiko Seki in it...) four episodes long in it's entirety. I adore anything CLAMP... but I think most of their movies need the anime/are too cutesy. I'm no help. :x Sorry, thought I'd give it a try, though.

Petshop is only four episodes long? It's definitely a consideration, then.

Yeah, if you read the manga the episodes are Daughter, Delicious, Despair and Dual in that order. I don't know if I'd recommend it for *newcomers* to anime (I don't remember if you mentioned that some would be) because I think it takes someone pretty used to the inherent weirdness to like this one, lol. Anyway, glad I could be of at least some help. :p

Oh! And has "Please Save my Earth" already been suggested or used? I don't think it counts as 'shounen ai' since one of them was a woman in a past life. :3

macross plus? ^^;;
um... the other one that was released in english theatres... Princess Mononoke?
Kiki's Delivery Service is cute, but not sure if it will convince a lot of people to stay in your club...

but man~ y'all have shown a lot of stuff recently!

From: [identity profile] kodalai.livejournal.com
Shown Macross and Mononoke. Also Kiki's. And none of these are like, *immediate* past, so they *could* be shown again. Except for Utena and Cagliostro.

Right now, Mononoke is our fallback plan.

>_>
Mononoke will keep people in the club?

well, okay, I'll admit it has some... er... something

ah, hell, now I have to suggest something too, eh? Hm...
um...
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal? Hakkenden? *cough*
er...

*slinks away stealthily*

Ooh, Kenshin! That's a good idea. Would also give *me* a chance to see the OAVs.

^_^
um... if you don't have them/haven't seen them/won't watch them in the club...
want me to send them to you? ^_^

subbed, even! XD (at least I think so - I'd have to check to make 100% sure -_-; lousy memory)

I like that idea! I'll have to check with Matt first, before I give the go-ahead.

From: [identity profile] iniq.livejournal.com
I just checked them - they're all subbed... >_> even by the same ... fansub or licensed, I don't know *cough* I got them from a friend ^^;
I could burn them tomorrow while I'm studyin- after I've studied for my midterm ^_^

ah, and... have you shown Blood: The Last Vampire yet? *fangirl*

Date: 2004-07-20 06:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kodalai.livejournal.com
Not yet! I even have it, so it's a possibility.

But... for an opener? It would make a better Halloween showing to omou.

From: [identity profile] kaworu.livejournal.com
i was going to suggest princess mononoke, too. :3
not 'too blatantly pornish'; that makes it kinna hard, ne?

there's.. catnapped, or maybe studio ghibli's the cat returns if you're able to show something subtitled? i'm supposing x is overly gory..

Not only able to show subs, but required! Our club is horribly sub-snobby.

And we opened with Neko no Onegaishi last year. -_-;

Metropolis, Spriggan, Crest of the Stars.

Date: 2004-07-20 10:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kodalai.livejournal.com
Have already shown Metropolis -- don't think it's really good enough to open with -- Spriggan is a good suggestion but might be too gory -- and CotS is a series as far as I know, and already on the table for the fall.

Or is CotS an OAV? In which case, it's under consideration.

Ack, I got the wrong title. I was thinking of Voices of a Distant Star (http://www.advfilms.com/favorites/voices/). It's probably too short though. And I'm sure Jin-Roh is too violent. You've probably already shown the Escaflowne movie, too, right? *should have looked at your list again*

DC suggested that maybe you could also show some AMVs, if you're able to display downloaded stuff. She also suggests something called Roujin Z (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/630506251X/qid=1090345660/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/103-1894502-4229453?v=glance&s=dvd).

You could always scare everyone away with FCLC. ^_^

Ooh, good idea.

Right now the number one candidate according to me is the Kenshin OAVs... but it's good to have options. B'sides, we need to have a showing for every Friday... @_@

*passing by a flist of a friend, randomly replying because.... i'm tired...*

i can't sing the praises of millenium actress enough. it's glorious, so beautiful, and there's nothing about the story that needs to be anime, which only showcases the beauty of the style.

same director, you also have perfect blue, which is veryvery psychological, and tokyo godfathers, which i watched tonight but did no absorb.

...i know there's something else i should be thinking of. the *coughs*real*coughs* vampire princess miyu is only 4 eps long, but it really needs to be watched subbed...

*stops bother the nice strangers*

Ooh, I keep hearing good things about Millenium Actress.

Perfect Blue's kinda gory. Not for some people, I know, but it was borderline for me, and I warned my odler sister she probably didn;t want to see it at all.

The odlest, in fact!

You've always been odder.

We showed Perfect Blue already. I don't think we've shown MA, at the least, I haven't seen it. Someone else suggested it to me, both MA and TG, but I haven't seen either of them myself so I'm not sure I can really okay it...

VPM is also on the list, but not, we think, as an opening.

Subbed is not only not a problem, it's a requirement! See above comments about my club and sub snobs.

There's the Ah! Megami-sama OAVs (five episodes, I think) or the movie...

>< I can't think of anything else. I suppose thirteen episodes is still too long for opening night.

Random thought - what about the Patlabor movie? I caught it on cable a little while ago and liked it quite a bit. I believe it meets all your criteria, though it was dubbed. Don't know if that's a huge problem. I have no idea what the anime fans think of it, but as an "outsider," I liked it, so it might be good to reel in the rubes.

According to IMDB, the movie I saw was actually Patlabor III. I didn't notice any continuity that I was missing out on.

Patlabor movie is already on the shelf, but we don't think it's right for opening night.

Actually, come to think of it, we already showed at least one of the Patlabors.

Poco Rosso might be out by then. Catnapped or Catsoup would be interesting. Here is Greenwood is a good choice. Moldiver or Phantom Quest Corp too. How about the first Gundam movie?

Date: 2004-07-20 10:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kodalai.livejournal.com
We've already shown Legend of Porco Rosso. If Catnapped is the same as Ghibli's Neko no Onegaishi/The Cat Returns, then we opened with it last year. Never seen Koko wa Greenwood... never even heard of Moldiver or Phantom Quest Corp. Never seen the first Gundam movie. I could check them out though...

Right now I think we're looking at Mononoke-hime or more likely Kenshin if I can swing it. I remember my sempai who was club president last year mentioned that they'd shown the Kenshin OAVs within the past few years, but it wasn't either of the years while I was there. And I simply don't think that there's enough good, movie-length/OAV anime out there that we can show one every Friday evening for four years and never repeat ourselves...

Date: 2004-07-20 03:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] girl-starfish.livejournal.com
I recommend here is Greenwood. Just watched it myself.

Hmm... tough choice... Miyazaki movies are always great. The VHD bloodlust movie would be pretty cool. Some people may like the Ah My Goddess movie, its pretty stunning. YES GotF is WAY TOO DEPRESSING. I'd second the Escaflowne movie, and everyone always likes Cowboy Beebop tho I wan't that nuts about the movie I think a lot of other people liked it. Ooh, someone mentioned Petshop of Horrors, that's one of my favs! The Vampire Miyo OAV is also only 4 eps and very pretty I think. I also totally agree with Read or Die OAV, only 3 eps. Could do something crazy like Dragon Half or Elf Princess Rane, those are both 2 eps.
Ah, college anime clubs... how I miss mine...
