The director is obviously attempting to do something very metaphorical and meaningful here.

The Tower of Babelfish:

Take the first paragraph from your last journal entry. Go to the altavista babelfish translator (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr) and enter that paragraph into the block. Pick a random language and translate it, then copy that text and translate back. Put all three versions in your journal along with the instructions.

Word of the day was "books." [livejournal.com profile] oysterverse was getting rid of a whole bunch of books, so I went through my bookcase and pulled out all of the books that fell into three categories: the "hand me down/ unwanted gifts" category, the "my god what the hell was I thinking?" category, and the "this isn't even MINE!" category. I'm pleased: all the rest of my collection will fit onto three half-shelves, not counting graphic novels. And I could get rid of more: I organized my books while I was at it, and I think I could dump the whole "iffy series fantasy" shelf without shedding a tear. But as of yet, my parents are still willing to store it, so why not?

I also remembered at the last minute that a friend of mine, liz, has always been a pretty big book fanatic and had once expressed the sentiment that when my parents start dumping books by the ton (they have more than twelve thousand!) she can come over and pick through the wreckage. So I called her over and she looked at the reject boxes, and pulled out a stack full to take with. The rest of them went up to the Book Swap, except for the hardbacks, which will go to the library. I'm glad they didn't all get given away to strangers, tho.

Today was also my first Japanese lesson with my new student. I'm optomistic about this one. She was much more engaged than the last guy, very interested and more involved, and not allergic to things like work or taking notes. She's also very into anime and manga, and is already familiar with fangirl japanese. But the amusing thing was when she was talking about all these series that a friend of hers had reccommended -- Demon Diary and Descendants of Darkness, Gravitation and FAKE -- and she said that she was starting to get a little nervous about what she would reccommend next. Lately, it seems, it's been Saiyuki, and she commented that she kept being afraid that two of the guys would suddenly start kissing.

XD

I laughed, and assured her that it was a commond pitfall. But I was very amused imagining this friend of hers, trying to sell her on shounen-ai manga. Hee.

Anyway, I like her a lot. She's cute (only fourteen! was I ever that young?) and nice, and I think pretty smart. Only downside is that her mother is reluctant to pay me more than ten dollars an hour. Ah well...

You need to put more interests in. XP And I didn't find out about shounen ai until I was 16 and got into Sailor Moon. *waves the Kunzite/Zoisite flag*

Never really needed to... it was only supposed to be a journal for those in the know, anyway. And I didn't find out about SA until I was at least 17, probably 18.

*nods* I remember the "you mean that's a guy?!?" reaction I had... almost the same as finding out Nermal was male. >____<

*sigh* Now I'm getting nostalgic for those old Sailor Moon fics. Wonder if I can find any of them...

But Haruka rocks the house, too. It was FishEye that totally threw me off. All of the Dark Moon Circus people were FLAMING.

Gods, yes... I'm pretty sure that wherever the Dark Moon Circus came from, it was a place where gender has no meaning...

Your R.A. Salvatore collection was even more embarrassing than my Dragonlance collection. Especially since you ended up with so much of my Dragonlances...

Y'know, I'm not sure which is worse: owning so much hack fantasy, or having bought that many overpriced copies of Ah! Megami-sama books.

Just three shelves of books?
I think that my DJ collection is bigger then that. However my problem is that OTHER people's books come to my house to live 'because I have room'. The piles just keep getting bigger because of that.

I really didn't discover shounen-ai until I was in my 20s. Sigh. However I really enjoyed all the "la cage aux follies". movies that I went to in high school with my dad. No else wanted to see them with me.

Good luck with the student. Get her started on Kanji right away. Thats been the most difficult part for me, memorising all that.

And I could get rid of more:

*whimper*

I cannot get rid of books. I'm useless at it. i can't get rid of any, even the bad series fantasy ones (like Animorphs) and the ones I've never read and probably will never read. I just can't do it.
