In the recurring flashback where Goku is thinking about that songbird that visited him in his prison, and when it's dead on the ground just outside of his reach, I'm left a little unclear as to why exactly he was trying so desperately to reach for it. I assumed he was planning to eat it, but that seems a little out of character for the series. Does anyone know for sure?

[edit] And now I'm having really really really wrong thoughts involving a goku/sanzo fic.

It's symbolic of the freedom he wants. It's so close, but he can't reach it.

Oh, okay. Birds, freedom, that does make sense -- it just didn't occur to me because Goku's not really the symbol-minded type.
