Cesar Chavez was a fairly famous labor organizer in Southern California. He's known for unionizing migrant labors and inisting on fair treatment.

He's a pretty local hero to the best of my knowledge. To the hispanic and working populace much the way that Martin Luther King is to the black populace.

Not just a "local" hero. We noticed when that Austin has named two major roads after two major liberal minority rights heroes Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez (the only two streets named after contemporary people); so Chavez is obviously a hero at least as far east as Texas.

Well, I meant "local" as in the holiday. I never knew the day existed until I came to SoCal, as opposed to Memorial Day and MLK Day, which are celebreated pretty much everywhere.
