In other news:
"The American Family Association has decided to try and "prove a point" by having a poll on their website for folks to take about their opinion on gay marriage. They intend to present the results of this poll to the United States Congress in an attempt to instate a federal law against Gay Marriage.
It's obvious that they think that this poll will come out in their favor, and that the vast majority of people will vote to keep marriage for traditional couples only. However, this is LiveJournal, and we are FAR from traditional!
I ask you all to please visit http://www.afa.net/petitions/marriagepoll.asp and let your opinion be heard. It takes about 45 seconds, and it is SUCH an important topic. Whether you are gay or straight, conservative or liberal, your opinion matters, and you NEED to vote here.
While it's obvious that I am on the "pro gay marriage" side of the fence, I still want you to vote if you are against it. The point here is to have a LEGITIMATE cross section of people voting in this poll. The only folks who were even made aware of its existence were the people on the AFA's mailing list and the people who happened to wander across their website. They have absolutely every intention of presenting this poll in the form of a petition to congress against gay marriage. I wonder if they will still present it when the YAYs outweigh the NAYs?
PLEASE let your voice be heard.
========================
There seems to actually be a difference. O_o Last night, so I hear, they had something like 95% against. When I took the poll this morning, it was 85%, and I heard later it was 80%.
So...
Vote!
P.S. And if you do, post in here about what numbers you saw. I'm curious, but I can't get back to the results page.
Oh yeah. I'm going to last-minute cram for my final now.
While doing excercises, this afternoon, I was overwhelmed with themes of doom. All my practice sentences were coming out like "No matter how hard I study, I can't understand it," or "Even if I work hard, it won't turn out well." But at some point I stopped, and made a conscious effort to write this kind of sentence instead: "No matter how difficult the test is, I'll do my best," and "The reason I did well was because I studied hard."
And just like that, it got easier. I could remember more. I wasn't so frustrated.
So, I will make sure that I go in with a positive attitude, so that the ineffable zen of the universe will be more favorably disposed to me.

Date: 2003-12-17 10:22 pm (UTC)I noticed, with aggravation, that one of the choices was "I favor a 'civil union' with the full benefits of marriage except for the name". I'm sure that everyone who reads this already knows this, but as a resident of Massachusetts who has been reading a LOT about this lately, I really want to correct this common misapprehension... CIVIL UNIONS DO NOT PROVIDE THE FULL BENEFITS OF MARRIAGE WITHOUT THE NAME.
It's not even simply "the name is important!" argument, which I also agree with -- but Vermont civil unions, and the civil unions that the conservatives are trying to push here in Mass in place of gay marriage, do NOT provide anything like the full benefits of civil marriage. Barely a third of the protections provided to married couples are accorded to "domestic partnerships" and civil unions. (For instance, having your union recognized in other states -- which can be a huge issue!) IT'S NOT JUST THE NAME!
Thank you, this has been a rant courtesy your local crazy person, it's late and I'm tired. Back to papers...

Date: 2003-12-18 11:47 am (UTC)I think you're right. I'm impressed. Even as it is now, it's hardly the, what, 85% against that the media claims the national opinion to be.
