What kind of tape-repellant material did they spray these dorm walls with? O.o;;; I'm trying to hang my posters with packing tape and they won't stay up. And then they have the nerve to tell us "no duct tape..." It's all part of a conspiracy to drive us mad by forcing us to look at these hideous walls! @.@

Use sticky tack to hang the posters up with. It's this cool sticky putty stuff and you can buy it in stores, in the tapes and adhesives section... or wherever they put picture hanging things. It's usually better than tape and doesn't damage the posters as much.

Hmmm... that's a thought.

We used to have to use that sticky stuff in the dorm rooms because we were not allowed to use tape of any kind. Back then the sticky putty stuff didn't work as well so we used tape anyway. Hmm...maybe the sticky stuff doesn't work as well in high humidity. (un-airconditioned south Louisiana - the humidity doesn't get much higher than that.)

Anyway, here are some tricks we used:
-use the outlawed tape but "surround" it with lawful material in case of room inspection. Do they still do that?
-when the outlawed material inevitably takes the paint off the wall, we a)used large chips of paint from the hallway to glue to the spot on the wall to make it look like the paint was just beginning to peel. b)filled the spot in with toothpaste of the correct color, or c) mixed paint the exact shade to fill in the hole. (this is easier to do if you're an art major.)

But this is southern California! It's naturally a desert! How could it be *less* humid? So why doesn't the damn tape stick? >.

*points up at other posts* The stuff is called Uhu Hold-It, and they have it at Aaron Brothers. If, for some reason that doesn't hold 'em up, try musuem wax (aka quake wax), which you should be able to get at any Home Depot. If museum wax doesn't work, then I don't know what will.

Yes, but how am I supposed to get it from there to here? >.< No car, no Home Depot within biking distance... I have to make due with what's sold in the bookstore (who horribly, horribly overcharged because they have a captive audience.)

There isn't an art supply store near there? They should have the Uhu stuff, if nothing else. Or it could also be in the art supply section of the campus bookstore...

*scratches head*

somethin else

I've had my best success with Scotch brand Removable Mounting Squares, which they ought to sell in the Campus Store or any Staples or office-supply-type place.

There are actually two kinds of Scotch brand Removable Mounting Squares -- clear see-through, very easy to remove but doesn't stay up as well, and black foam, which holds better and is still pretty easy to remove without damaging the wall. When you remove the poster from the wall, the foam squares tear in half, so you can rub the remaining half off the wall (and try to rub the other half off the poster), which isn't as hard as it sounds. It's pretty much a hit-or-miss what kind of squares your store carries, though I suggest the black ones.

If you're not worried about the wall, they also have regular (NON-Removable) Mounting Squares (white foam), which ought to hold, certainly better than tape or tacky putty. They may cause some damage at the end of the year when you remove them, though. (I personally am a fan of using white-out to patch up paint holes in the wall.)

One last suggestion -- no matter what you use to mount your pictures, it's likely to damage the pictures (if not the wall) when you take them down. Da Mama gave me the perfect solution to this years ago. Put squares of clear packing tape on each back corner of your picture (which will never come off again, obviously). Whatever you use to mount the picture won't adhere permanently to the tape surface, so you can remove it later without tearing your pictures!
