school related thoughts:

am annoyed by young Western idiots who take the romanticised trickle-down notions of Buddhism and translate it into "Buddhism is the perfect feel-good religion! It's so much better than Christianity so nyeah! Buddhists never hurt anybody, unlike Christianity!" News flash, kids. It's over two thousand years old and spans four ancient civilizations, with huge libraries of texts written in a dozen languages. It's been the official country religion. It's been banned in the country. It's been popular. It's been elitist. It can be kind, yes, but it can also be cruel.

am super annoyed by young idiots in my STS class who have this notion that by virtue of being born in the 20th centurty, this automatically makes them smarter than everyone who ever lived in history. We're at the end of the 16th century and the professor is trying to explain dominican versus jesuit order politics -- namely, the distinction between having certain knowledge of hypothetical events or not. Seeing that we were having difficulty with the concept, the prof added, "It's a very subtle point of difference."

so this idiot in front of me put up his hand and said, "If the point is that subtle, does that mean that the dominicans and jesuits didn't fully understand it themselves?"

NO. Asshat. That's just you.

am amused by a project I passed on my way out of Statistics. it was one project of an assigned project studying oscillation and flow; this part of the project focused on the battle at helms deep, and the question of orc-flux through the hole in the wall at helms deep, assuming a steady acceleration of orc-flow per minute until the RA is maxed out.

this got me thinking about helms deep of course, and I was thinking about why they made the move to helms deep and how they thought it would be safe there. as I was unlocking my bike from the rack, I said aloud, "Which they would have been if not for the blasting powder!'

the guy getting his bike next to me turned and said "huh?"

I sort of blushed and said, "Oh, just talking to myself... thinking about the battle at helms deep."

his eyes got very round and he said, "Dude... that is such a turn on."

was too amused to be offended.
